Phlebotomy Technician (FastForward)

This program prepare students to take the NCCT Phlebotomy Technician certification exam, and to be hired as a professional phlebotomy technician dedicated to the art of blood withdrawal.  Graduates will be equipped to prepare the patient, perform venipuncture and assist to maintain the quaility of the specimen.  The program goal is to prepare competent entry-level phlebotomy technicians in the cognitive (knowledge), phsychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.  It also is an appropriate certification for practitioners of other related healthcare occupations (such as LPNs, RNs, Medical Assistants, Clinical Lab Technicians). 

The Phlebotomist/Phlebotomy Technician is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient's blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection to produce quality results. Students will learn to:
     - collect, transport, handle and process blood specimens for analysis
     - identify and select appropriate equipment
     - recognize and handle issues such as infection control and contamination

Students will learn in both didactic (classroom) and clinical environments, and will be required to successfully perform at least 25 "sticks."

This class is offered through the Virginia FastForward program; once eligibility is determined, the Commonwealth of Virginia will pay for 2/3 of the class cost.  Financial assistance is available to help students with the remaining 1/3.

Class cost includes: instructor, textbook, one certification exam voucher, CPR class, insurance, background checks, drug screen and practice kits.
